We are just over half way through the book! I love seeing the excitement on their faces as they are reading this story. There is nothing better than reading the assigned chapters and then hearing, 'Can't we keep reading!"

Earlier this week I sent out an email about Gifted Family Day in Kansas City. If you and your family are able to attend this, I think it would be an amazing opportunity! The link below will give you all the details.

We have read the first five chapters in "The Giver". The kids are really enjoying the story so far. Tomorrow we will read Chapters 6-10 and complete three activities on a novel choice board. These activities include drawing a picture of a scene, write a poem, draw a comic strip showing a scene, and some six activities to choose from.

Last Friday we had 3 challenges based on the books 'Iggy the Architect', 'Rosie Revere Engineer', and 'Jack and the Beanstalk'.

The first challenge was the marshmallow challenge. Build the tallest structure with 20 pieces of spaghetti, tape, string, and a marshmallow. The winner of this challenge was the 3rd grade girls. They built a structure of 22 inches tall. The boys in the 4th, 5th, 6th grade group built the second tallest structure at 18 inches tall.

The second challenge was to redesign Rosie's heli-o-cheese-copter to slow down its speed upon landing. They had a heli-o-cheese-copter template, small paperclip, scissors, tape, hole punch, and scrap paper. The winner of this challenge was the 5th and 6th grade girls.

The third challenge was to build the tallest 'beanstalk' using 20 pipe cleaners. This was an individual challenge. The winner of this challenge was Blake, with a beanstalk standing 15 inches tall! Maycie had the tallest in her groups, at 12 3/4 inches.

We will not be having High Flyers this week due to Spring break. We will begin our last unit next week. This unit will be over the book 'The Giver'.

We have gotten a lot accomplished on the Adventure stories! Almost everyone has their story typed into Google Forms. This week we will add personal touches, such as selecting a theme for the form and adding images. I'm expecting these to be completed this week. Once they are completed I will add links to each of them on this blog!

Thursday, February 25, 2016

This week we get a double dose of High Flyers! We met on Monday to make up for last Friday when I was at a conference. On Monday we started our next mini unit- Choose Your Own Adventure. Students completed a story map based on choices for each part of their story. If you are familiar with the book "Meanwhile", it is very similar to that. Students are given a question with two choices. Depending on their answer, decides which way the story goes next. Tomorrow everyone will be creating a Google Form that they will be typing this story into. Students are allowed to personalize their form and add pictures to each page. Once they are completed I will add the links to this blog so you can see their completed story! I am expecting these to be completed by next Friday.

The Studio unit is complete. Last Friday each student created a real estate listing for their studio. If you would like to see your child's listing, ask them to show you! It is on their Google Drive!

I will not be meeting with the High Flyers this week. I will be attending a conference the end of this week. Due to this I will be meeting with them next Monday, February 29. We will begin our next unit, "Choose Your Adventure". In this unit, students will be creating an adventure for their classmates using Google Forms. They will begin by using a story map to assist with getting their thoughts on paper.

The studios are complete! They turned out pretty good! Although I think everyone could agree that they need to work on their angles and being more precious when building! :) This week we are going to do two more activities with the studios! First we are going to figure out the building cost of each studio, then we are going to create a real estate listing on the computer for their studio. They will come up with a catchy title, figure the square footage, and create a listing to attract potential buyers!

Tomorrow should be our last day of building! We will begin with assembling the Studio's components. Then each student will choose a roof design, draft it, and then build it.

Once the studios are built it is time for creativity! Each student will be able to personalize their studios. Students will select a theme for this process. Students will need to provide all the supplies for this part of the project. They may bring their supplies any time next week. They will need to have their supplies here by next Friday, February 5. I will send home a reminder note next week!

Friday, January 15, 2016

So sorry this is posted so late in the week!!! Last week we were able to build the floor for the studios and the two side walls. This week they have built the front and rear walls. We will not be meeting next week due to meetings I will be attending. But the following week everyone will choose their roof design, draft it, and then build it. Once the roofs are completed we will assemble the studios!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas! It's tough coming back to reality, but I'm glad to be back into a routine!

This quarter we are going to use the designing and engineering process to create a studio! Students will choose from three different floor plans. They will build it based on the plan they choose, then once it is built they will be able to decorate it to suit their personality! Our studios will be built out of dowel rods. This week I'm hoping after the project is introduced and floor plans are chosen, we can construct the floor and possibly the side walls.

The Road Trip Adventure was a great experience! Students were able to increase their computer skills and see what it is like to plan a real vacation. Most students were able to visit at least six attractions! Below is a map of all the attractions they visited!
